The Expedition

The same ocean.

Two entirely different encounters.

This expedition traces the Indian Ocean coastline from KwaZulu-Natal to southern Mozambique — eight days built entirely around encounters with wild sharks in open water. No cages. No reef fillers. No compromises. For those who wish to extend, three nights at Mavela Game Lodge in Zululand complete the journey with Big Five territory and the golden-hour light of the African bush.

The Program
Act I · Days 1–5

Aliwal Shoal

Umkomaas · KwaZulu-Natal · South Africa

Aliwal Shoal in late February is one of the most reliable tiger shark destinations on the planet. Warm Indian Ocean water, baited encounters at close range, and a site that rewards patience and positioning. The base is Blue Ocean Dive Resort — a colonial-era property in Umkomaas with its own dive centre, three boats, and a sea-view restaurant. Everything on one site. Gear is handled end to end. Every dive is a shark dive.

Day 1

Arrival & Briefing

Transfer from King Shaka International Airport to Blue Ocean Dive Resort, Umkomaas. Equipment check, site briefing, photography orientation session. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2-4

Tiger Shark Dives · Aliwal Shoal

Two morning shark dives as standard, with a third afternoon dive when conditions allow. Surface intervals used for image review, settings discussion, and shot planning for the next dive. The focus is tiger sharks — present in peak numbers in February, drawn to baited dives at predictable depth and range.

Day 5

Final Aliwal Dives · Afternoon Transfer

Morning shark dives. Image editing session post-dive. Afternoon transfer south toward the Mozambique border, overnight near Kosi Bay.

Act II · Days 6–9

Ponta do Ouro

Southern Mozambique

Ponta do Ouro is where the expedition shifts register. The diving here is unbaited — sharks approach on their own terms, drawn to the structure of Pinnacles Reef rising from 50 metres to 29 metres off the ocean floor. Bull sharks, hammerheads, silvertips, tigers. Up to 16 species have been recorded in these waters. February sits at the height of the season. A new coastal road now makes the crossing from KZN seamless.

Day 6

Border Crossing · Arrival Ponta do Ouro

Morning transfer from Kosi Bay area, border crossing into Mozambique, arrival at Ponta do Ouro by midday. Afternoon dive briefing and first orientation dive at a shallower site to calibrate to local conditions.

Day 7-9

Pinnacles Reef · Unbaited Shark Encounters

The headline dives of Act II. Pinnacles is the primary shark site — a deep reef structure 3.5km offshore that acts as a natural aggregation point for bull sharks, hammerheads and tigers. Encounters are entirely unbaited: sharks approach out of curiosity. Two to three dives daily depending on conditions. Topside coaching between dives focused on adapting technique from baited to unbaited encounters.

Day 10

Departure Day · No Diving

An early start for all guests. No dives scheduled — transfers require an early departure from Ponta do Ouro. Final image review over breakfast, then the group divides.

Ocean Program Only

Transfer back across the Mozambique border, transfer to King Shaka International Airport. Afternoon departures.

Safari Extension

Transfer to Mavela Game Lodge, Zululand. Arrive in time for lunch and the first afternoon game drive.

Optional Extension · Days 10–13

Mavela Game Lodge

Manyoni Private Game Reserve · Zululand

The expedition ends in the Zululand bushveld. Mavela sits within Manyoni Private Game Reserve — Big Five territory, morning and evening game drives led by Mavela's rangers, photographic direction layered on top. After eight days of concentrated ocean work, the bush offers a different pace, a different light, and a different set of photographic problems to solve.

Day 10

Arrival · Mavela Game Lodge

Transfer from Ponta do Ouro, border crossing, arrive Mavela by midday. Lunch. First afternoon game drive — lions, elephants, white rhino, leopard territory. Sundowner in the bush. Dinner at the lodge.

Days 11–12

Full Safari Days · Manyoni Reserve

Morning and evening game drives in open vehicles. The golden-hour windows — early morning and the hour before sunset — are the photographic priority. Midday downtime for image editing, rest, and portfolio review. Photography direction focused on light, behaviour anticipation, and the transition from underwater to terrestrial subjects.

Day 13

Final Morning · Departure

Dawn game drive. Breakfast. Transfer to King Shaka International Airport for afternoon departures.

David

Wildlife & underwater photographer

On this expedition, Louis is in the water with you — not observing from above. Every dive briefing, every image review, every conversation about light and composition comes from someone who shoots the same environments you are shooting, with the same challenges and the same equipment constraints.

His background is split between the surface and the deep: years of wildlife photography in Africa followed by a deliberate move into underwater work beginning in the waters of Sulawesi. The reef and the cenote demand different things from a photographer. He has worked seriously in both, and that is what the guidance on this expedition is built from.
